Getting Around Mahé Without a Rental Car
October 6, 2026
Mahé is only around 27km long, but the terrain is mountainous and the coast road winds constantly, so journeys take longer than the distance on a map suggests. How you get around has a real effect on how much of the island you actually see.
Public buses
Seychelles has an affordable public bus network covering most of Mahé, run by the Seychelles Public Transport Corporation. It's a genuinely cheap way to get between the main towns, but schedules can be infrequent outside Victoria, and piecing together more than one or two stops in a day takes planning if you're on a short trip.
Taxis
Taxis are available island-wide but aren't metered, so it's worth agreeing a price before you set off. They work well for a single point-to-point trip, but costs add up quickly if you're trying to see several beaches, viewpoints or villages in one day.
Rental cars
Driving is on the left, and Mahé's interior roads involve steep gradients, hairpin bends and the odd one-lane stretch around blind corners: manageable, but a different experience than most visitors are used to. It's a reasonable option if you're confident driving unfamiliar mountain roads and want full flexibility.
Private tours and transfers
This is where a private guide earns its keep: someone who already knows the roads, the timing, and which viewpoints and beaches are worth the stop that day. It also means everyone in your group can actually look at the scenery instead of watching the road.
Our take
If you're only sticking to one or two nearby beaches, a taxi or the bus works fine. If you want to see more of the island in a day (the mountain viewpoints, Victoria, a few different beaches), a private tour usually ends up being the simplest and most comfortable option, and isn't far off a taxi's cost once you add up multiple point-to-point trips.
