Beau Vallon vs Anse Royale: Which Beach to Pick
October 1, 2026
Mahé has beaches for every kind of day, but two of the most popular sit at opposite ends of the spectrum: Beau Vallon in the north, and Anse Royale in the south. Both are easy day trips, but the experience is quite different.
Beau Vallon: lively and convenient
Beau Vallon is Mahé's most photographed beach: a wide, long arc of golden sand on the northwest coast, with calm, swimmable water for most of the year and a reef a short swim offshore for snorkelling. It's also the island's liveliest beach, lined with restaurants and bars, so it's an easy choice if you want to combine a swim with lunch or sundowners.
On Wednesday evenings, part of the beachfront hosts a popular open-air night market with local food stalls, a nice reason to time a visit there for the evening if your schedule allows.
Because it faces northwest, Beau Vallon also tends to stay calmer during the Southeast monsoon (May–September), when other coasts get choppier.
Anse Royale: quiet and reef-close
Anse Royale, on Mahé's southeast coast, is a different kind of beach day: longer, quieter, and backed by a fringing reef that sits close to shore. At low tide the reef is partly exposed, which makes for interesting tide-pool exploring, while the deeper sections are good for a relaxed swim.
It's considerably less crowded than Beau Vallon, with fewer restaurants directly on the beach, so it suits travellers who want space and quiet over amenities. It also sits near the Jardin du Roi spice garden, so it pairs well with a short detour inland.
So which one?
Pick Beau Vallon if you want convenience: swimming, food and a social atmosphere all in one spot, especially outside the Southeast monsoon months. Pick Anse Royale if you'd rather have a quieter stretch of sand, don't mind fewer amenities, and like the idea of exploring a reef at low tide.
If you can't decide, our Mahé Half-Day Tour (South) visits Anse Royale alongside Takamaka Beach, so you can see it for yourself without committing a whole day to just one beach.
